JIRAH JOSHUA
FURNITURE MAKER +
R–F LEAD DESIGNER / DIRECTOR
Jirah’s vision for + approach to design is intuitive and conceptual.
He uses the two main influences in his work - Ceremony + Set Design, to romanticize the experience of the home or public space.
His work is a sharp balance of raw vision and technical training.
“My first creative medium was portraiture,
and my approach still carries that undertone.
Creating custom work is essentially a portrait of my impression of A client / collaborator. —
It’s about channeling, listening, and reading the room.”
ABOUT.
Jirah has a background in creating performance film, with psychological, symbolic and figurative concepts. His nomadic experience allowed him to encounter / occupy so many ‘rooms’– which largely influenced the set design + subject matter in his work. He noticed the ‘rebirth’ aspect of a new space, how layout, location, lighting, etc. impacts and reshapes the mind.
This sparked the realization that these performances romanticized and exaggerated everyday acts; like getting out of bed, brushing his hair, sitting in his room and the ‘choreography’ of moving through the home.
His new awareness abruptly evolved into focusing not on ‘the act’, but the space. Bridging together all of his previous forms of artistic exploration : the common thread was always based on space or a ‘Room’. So, he went from focusing on the act of “getting out of bed” in a performance piece, to creating the bed, the dinner table; in interior design, as a stage for his clients to partake in “romanticizing” and “exaggerating” the everyday.
These psychological, performance / image-based undertones are carried in his design and spatial work today.
